What Exactly is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy comes from the Greek words cryo (meaning cold) and therapy (meaning treatment).
It is a wellness and medical technique that exposes the body to extremely cold temperatures
for a short period to promote healing and recovery.
The therapeutic use of cold dates back to Ancient Greece, where ice and cold water
were used to reduce pain and inflammation.
Whole-Body Cryotherapy (WBC) — often described as a high-tech evolution of the traditional
ice bath — was developed in Japan in the late 1970s by Dr Toshima Yamaguchi. Originally
created to treat rheumatoid arthritis, it quickly became evident that cryotherapy’s benefits extend
much further. Today, it’s used to support recovery from inflammatory, autoimmune,
and musculoskeletal conditions, as well as to enhance athletic performance and overall wellness.

Whole Body Cryotherapy Chamber

At CryoLabs, our chambers consist of two separate rooms. The first is the pre-chamber, where you will stay for 30 seconds. This stage allows your
body to acclimatise, preparing it for the next phase. The temperature in the pre-chamber
remains between –65°C and –75°C.
Once the 30 seconds have passed, the operator will ask you to pass through the door and
enter the main treatment chamber.

The main chamber is cooled to an operating temperature of between –120°C and –130°C. You
will remain here for a further three minutes (additional time may be permitted, provided the
operator is satisfied with how you are feeling).

During this time, the extreme cold triggers a cascade of physiological responses. Your body's
cold sensors immediately alert the sympathetic nervous system, activating the fight-or-flight
response.

This can lead to feelings of increased energy and a rush of endorphins, which may improve mood and reduce pain.

The cold also causes blood vessels near the skin to constrict, directing blood flow towards the
core. This helps reduce inflammation in injured or inflamed tissues.

Once the three minutes have been reached the operator will then ask that everyone leaves via
the main chamber door and back into the pre-chamber, once everyone is back in the pre-
chamber and the main chamber door is closed everyone can then exit for a final time via the
pre-chamber door.

Anyone can leave at any time during the session following this same procedure.

Our chambers are indirect nitrogen systems, or externally chilled nitrogen systems, meaning
only cold, breathable air enters the chamber. This allows full-body immersion, including the
head, which is crucial as a significant number of the body’s thermoreceptors are located in the
head.

This maximises the effects of cryotherapy on the hypothalamus, the brain’s temperature
regulation centre, leading to a more pronounced overall thermal response.

Furthermore, full-body immersion ensures a more uniform and effective cold exposure,
enhancing vasoconstriction and promoting a deeper hormonal and anti-inflammatory response,
which is vital for effective therapeutic outcomes.

Despite the extremely low temperatures, the environment is not unpleasant. Because it uses
dry, cold air, the experience is far more tolerable and comfortable than physical immersion in
an ice bath, where temperatures typically range from just 2°C to 5°C.

Localised Cryotherapy

Localised cryotherapy is a therapeutic treatment that involves the application of cryogenically cooled air to a specific area of the body using a handheld device.

The stream of extremely cold air is directed precisely to the affected region to help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and accelerate recovery from injury.

Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, which exposes the entire body to cold temperatures, localised cryotherapy targets a specific muscle group, joint, or area of concern.

This focused approach helps decrease swelling, improve circulation, and promote healing by triggering the body’s natural recovery processes.

Localised cryotherapy is commonly used to treat conditions such as sprains, soft tissue injuries, as well as back, neck, and shoulder pain. It is also highly effective for post-operative recovery, helping to reduce swelling and pain, and to increase blood flow post-surgery.

Treatments typically last between 8 and 12 minutes, depending on the area being treated.

Actual treatment times vary depending on the area — for example, two 2-minute sessions for a wrist, or two 4-minute sessions for a hip.

A minimum of 12 hours should be left between treatments of the same body part. Allow approximately 20 minutes in total for a localised cryotherapy session.
